Yes, Tatort is one of THE German TV rituals. Every Sunday evening a good chunk of the nation sits on their sofa for 90min to witness the solving of a crime, usually a murder.
Tatort is the scene of a crime and it is usually a pair of detectives that investigates.
There have been more than 1,000 shows since they started airing in 1970.
What makes the series unusual is that episodes are based in many different German-speaking cities (meaning that Austrian and Swiss public broadcasters also contribute locations), currently 22. They are known by their city and have some ongoing storylines that revolve around the detectives in those cities, but there’s no necessary continuity from week to week. There are typically 35 new films per year.
Most famous German actors have appeared in a Tatort at some point. The most famous Tatort detective was probably Götz George, but many others have also played in them including such current stars as Til Schweiger, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Meret Becker, Nora Tschirner, Heike Makatsch, etc.
