I remember of trips to West Germany that you almost always and seemingly inevitably stayed next door to a church wherever you stayed over night, whether that was with relatives or in a Pension. Nothing wrong with that, but inevitably, the bells at these churches would go into full aural attack mode round about 5:30h in the morning, calling sleepless older people to the early morning mass, and robbing travelling young people of sleep.
Were there so many churches before? Were they ringing their bells more? Were people attending early morning services more?
It seems to me that at least for Berlin, the sound of ringing church bells is now somewhat rare and I actually am surprised when I hear bells.
